Hot yoga. Hot Body.
Recently I’ve become obsessed with Hot yoga (also known as Bikram Yoga). Wikepedia describes Hot Yoga as yoga exercises performed in hot and humid temperatures. I currently attend the Funky Buddah Yoga Hothouse in my city, but it seems intimidating to everyone I ask to join me.
Did you know that hot yoga, aside from being the best hour and fifteen minutes of my day, has many health benefits?
1. Flexibility: We all know that yoga makes us more flexible. Yoga in a 95 degree room is great because you’re operating at basically the same temperature that you body is anyway, so you’re already warmed up! When your muscles are more flexible, you’re at less risk for injury.
2. Stress Relief: Hot yoga helps relax the mind and the body.
3. You burn more fat: In hot yoga, you burn more fat than a regular yoga class. It is common to lose centimeters in a short time of hot yoga practice.
4. Your feel stronger: Your body is stronger, but you also strengthen your will power, and your ability to challenge yourself, since hot yoga requires lots of concentration.
5. Your skin looks better: Sweat makes our body release toxins. It’s a natural detox, plus your skin has a healthy sweaty glow

I love running, yoga, tennis… but bikram is the best work-out! It’s a perfect way to get rid of toxins. I drink a whole liter of water during the class, and then another after.

There is a fair amount of controversy regarding Hot Yoga and the dangers of practicing in an excessively heated room. I am a long time practitioner and teacher who feels that I can accomplish #1-5 from above without the outer-imposed heat. It is up to me to be present to my practice, to manifest the poses from the inside-out, not to hang out and make shapes. This will, in fact, make one sweaty. There is no scientific evidence to support one burns more fat in a hot yoga class, or that you release more toxins. The job of sweating is to cool the body down. We release toxins by urination and defecation. Interesting article on Elephant Journal that explains all of this in depth, and not from anyone who is affiliated with a specific style of yoga: http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.elephantjournal.com%2F2011%2F07%2Fare-supporters-of-excess-heat-and-sweat-in-yoga-class-just-full-of-hot-air-dan-pitkow%2F&h=SAQB7MrcAAQARot3OpgiMcrzVY9yT8wkTc33U9toDPMg4sA
